Revit Architecture 2011 New Feature Photos and Very Detailed Descriptions: "OK, here's the last batch of new information for today. If you're an email subscriber, you should be completely overwhelmed by now and this will ruin any chance of productivity for the entire day. It's probably buried 15 posts back and you'll never make it down there, but the release date is April 8th for all of the Revit products. All of the information posted today is copyrighted by me and Autodesk so please do not copy or distribute it. If you're going to repost this or any information, please be sure to give me and Revit3D.com full credit and a link back here.
My day is shot. It's 3:30 am and there is so much more to post about the 2011 products. I've been playing with Revit Architecture and Revit MEP 2011 versions for a few months now and the new and improved ribbon is so much nicer. Congratulations to Autodesk for really making some great improvements. The connectivity to the Green Building side of things will make Revit the King of BIM and there really is no competitive product in the marketplace.
The Revit MEP product enhancements are going to really drive the construction market to embrace BIM even more. If you're not using Revit or aren't getting your engineers to use it, THERE ARE NO MORE EXCUSES. Revit MEP 2011 is now ready for prime time. Any engineer who tells you otherwise should not be in business any more. It's time to fully get into BIG BIM or the contractors are going to do your job for you.
Enjoy all of the 2011 release information. I wish I could have shared this all with your sooner and I'm not sure why Autodesk made the embargo date so close to the release date, but you can all feel free to complain if you want the information sooner next year.
I have a few more surprises in store and I think they'll only be for email subscribers so you may want to consider my daily email updates www.revit3d.com/subscribe.

Several refinements and new features were added to the Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 User Interface, with a focus on providing faster access to the tools you want at all times.
The new Properties Palette is “modeless,” so you have constant access to both view and element properties, without having to interrupt your design workflow. The new palette is dockable, resizable and supports multiple monitor configurations.
The Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) has been greatly enhanced with a new dialog for customization. This interface allows you to reorder your tools and add dividers, for better organization and grouping of commands. Additionally, a single QAT now supports both the project and family editor environments.
The Keyboard Shortcuts dialog provides a quicker and easier way to assign shortcuts to all of your tools, including tools that were previously inaccessible for shortcuts. Search and filter options are also available, so you can more easily find the tools you need. Shortcuts are immediately available upon closing the dialog box, which means there is no need to restart the application.
The Modify and Contextual tabs have been redesigned to help reduce tab switching and mouse clicks, minimize ribbon flickering and provide consistent command placement.
[User Requested] Several new tools have been added to the right-click context menu, including Repeat last command, Repeat Commands recently used and Select All Instance Visible In View.
Lastly, Worksets and Design Options controls have been relocated to the Status Bar area, which means they are always available, no matter what you’re working on.
These features will enhance the everyday design workflow by adding new capabilities, as well as making simple tasks easier to accomplish.
You now have the ability to control temporary dimension font size and background display (transparent or opaque). Additionally, if temporary dimensions are moved to specific reference elements in the project, those references will be maintained throughout your working session.
In 3D views, the align tool can be used independent of the active workplane and can be used to align patterns on noncoincident surfaces.
Several features formerly available only to Autodesk® Revit® Structure software customers are now available in Autodesk Revit Architecture, such as the ability to create curved beams, slanted columns, beam copings, trusses, metal deck profiles, and more. The new Span Direction tool enables you to interactively control the span direction of structural decking in a Revit Architecture project.
[User Requested] With the 2011 release of Revit Architecture, the framework for display, print, and export of AutoCAD® DWG™ Drawings has been unified into one. Users should see improved visual fidelity in viewing, printing and exporting of AutoCAD files from Revit-based software.
The following features can enhance your everyday documentation process by helping you make your drawings look the way you want and by enabling you to better organize your project sheets as well as your consultants’ sheets.
[User Requested] Elevation tags are now fully customizable and can be designed based on your company standards. They can contain any graphics you want and can align to any number of orientations necessary for your project.
[User Requested] Several enhancements have been made to text and leaders. These enhancements include the ability to display a border around text notes, control the vertical alignment of leaders and create lists with bullets and numbered formatting. Additionally, familiar keyboard formatting shortcuts, such as Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U can now be used in Revit-based software, helping to save your time and improve ease-of-use.
[User Requested] Sheets Lists can now include placeholder sheet rows for sheets that have not yet been created or will never be created in your project, for example, consultants’ sheets. Placeholder sheets can be converted to actual sheets in the project and this conversion can be done as a batch operation.
[User Requested] Sheet Guide Grids are a graphic option on sheet views which allow you create drawing alignments across multiple sheets. Reference elements in your views, such as Levels, Grids and Reference Planes can be snapped to Guide Grids, and the grid spacing can be adjusted for individual sheets, depending on the sheet layout.
By utilizing existing tools from the massing (conceptual design) environment, as well as implementing a few key new features, the family editor environment has been made easier to use and more powerful.
New features such as loose-labeled dimensions and the visual display of related parameters take a lot of the guesswork out of editing and testing various parameter values. Simply by choosing a labeled parameter and clicking the Related Dimensions button on the Options bar, you can quickly see on-screen when multiple parameters are related with a formula.
In addition, you can test family parameter values interactively by directly manipulating geometry, rather than opening the Family Types dialog box. By simply dragging geometry, labeled parameters values are automatically updated. And labeled parameter values can be edited directly in the view, via their dimensions, similar to editing temporary dimensions. These new capabilities enable quicker-and-easier testing of multiple parameter values, which helps provide a smoother design workflow
Reporting parameters are a new type of instance parameter that can be applied in a variety of ways to achieve powerful results. Rather than driving geometry, they have their value driven by other dimensions in the family model. They can expose and report their dimensional value at any time for use in unlimited downstream workflows.
One example is when applying reporting parameters to curtain panel families. These parameters can be used to report and schedule the edge dimensions of each panel in a curtain panel–based divided surface. Another example is allowing reporting parameters associated with one part of the model to drive geometric elements in another part, such as allowing the width of a door opening to determine the doorframe thickness or allowing the length of a column to determine its radius.
For the 2011 release of Revit Architecture, we concentrated on improving the conceptual design tools in the three areas: form-making and editing, surface rationalization, and custom components.
Form-making and editing – Sketch editing for conceptual masses in Revit Architecture 2011 has been improved with the ability to edit individual profiles of any type of form without having to delete the form first, similar to “sketch mode” but even more accessible. The Dissolve Form command will remove the surfaces from a form, leaving behind the valuable defining profiles, curves, and points. In the past, only voids could be used as cutting elements for Boolean operations, and it was difficult to access them again for further transformations. Now solids can be used to cut other solids, so that when the cut is executed, geometry from both forms remains visible.
The Active Workplane Viewer is a temporary view that dynamically aligns to the active workplane and displays geometry associated with that workplane. This feature is valuable when inspecting or editing complex geometries. The contents of the viewer automatically update based on changes to the active workplane, and modifications can be made to the model in this temporary view.
Surface rationalization – We have greatly enhanced the ability to rationalize surfaces by allowing them to be split by levels, reference planes, and model lines (drawn on reference planes). So now, divided surface patterns can be made up of any combination of UV grids and intersects created by these new elements.
Custom components – The adaptive component is a generalized implementation of the pattern-based curtain panel family, which was initially introduced with the 2010 release of Autodesk Revit Architecture. It is designed to handle cases where components need to more flexibly adapt to many unique contextual conditions. The adaptive component can be used to simply fill in the empty edge panels on a divided surface or for more complex modeling or framing applications.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 enables you to simulate the sun path, in order to better understand the impact of the sun in relation to your project and its surrounding context. The sun path is a visual representation of the sun's range of movement across the sky at the geographic location you specify for a project. The sun path displays in the context of your project and includes on-screen controls for positioning the sun at any point within its range of movement.
With a valid Autodesk Subscription to Autodesk Revit Architecture, customers now can access Autodesk Green Building Studio web-based service during the term of their Subscription. This enables customers to more smoothly extend their building information modeling workflows to include sustainable analysis. With more than 1.6 million virtual weather locations across the globe, the climate information used in your analyses can be more local, accurate, and current.
By utilizing the power of cloud computing, Autodesk Green Building Studio can generate analyses in a matter of minutes, as compared to what typically would take much longer, thus enabling architects and designers to iterate through multiple design options earlier and more often.
Visual Styles: In addition to Wireframe, Hidden Line, Shaded and Shaded with Edges, Revit Architecture now has two new visual styles to help improve the quality of your design workflow and your presentations:
• Consistent Colors is a Shaded with Edges view that covers the model in even lighting, so you don’t have to worry about dark areas of the model due to undesigned lighting conditions
• Realistic is a shaded view with ‘live’ rendered materials and textures, including decals. It offers the ability to have a working view that looks almost like a rendering.
As part of the Graphic Display Options, Revit Architecture now offers an option to use Ambient Lighting (or Ambient Occlusion) in 3d views. Ambient occlusion approximates the way light radiates in real life, especially off what are normally considered non-reflective surfaces.
[User request] In addition to solid color and sky options, Revit Architecture can now use images for rendering backgrounds. Background images have several scaling and positioning options so that you can create the optimal effect.
[User request] You can now create custom procedural textures based on patterns such as checker, gradient, wood, or tiles.
More smoothly exchange material data between Autodesk applications with the new Autodesk Material Library. Materials can be exchanged with certain other supporting Autodesk applications (AutoCAD® software, Autodesk® Inventor®, Autodesk® Revit® Architecture, Autodesk® Revit® MEP software, and Autodesk®Revit® Structure software) in a true one-to-one mapping—helping create a consistent definition and rendered look and minimize the need to rework materials after data import. Users can benefit from a familiar workflow between products and enjoy access of to up to 1,200 material templates that help simplify complex scene setup.
Note: FBX® files created using Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 are not compatible with 2010 Autodesk products.
[User request] Rendering in the Revit family of products is no longer limited to the use of 4 cores on multi-processor computers. Revit-based software can now take advantage of as many cores that are available on your computer.
With the 2011 release of Autodesk Revit Architecture, a focus was placed on improving the experience of working on large projects with worksets and links.
Workset Control: Workset visibility control has been simplified with easier access to global and per-view visibility controls at any time in your work process.
View Filters: Additional granularity has been added to the control of view filters between host and linked projects, with the option to allow host view filters to act upon the linked model geometry.
Element Tagging: Revit Architecture now supports tagging of linked elements directly in the host file. This feature enables users to centralize all of their tags in one project, as opposed to managing tags for similar elements in multiple files.
Performance enhancements have been made that will affect customers working on any size project, such as improvements made to application startup time and UI reaction time. In addition, for teams working on larger projects, linking and synchronization times have been greatly improved.
Enhancements to the AEC Exchange functionality in Autodesk Inventor software have significantly improved data sharing between Autodesk Inventor 2011 and Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011.
To maintain consistency between Autodesk products, models published from Autodesk Inventor (via the ADSK file format) now better maintain the visual fidelity of materials when imported into Revit Architecture.
In addition, the AEC Exchange categories have been expanded to include several new categories, such as doors, windows, and lights.
In addition, we have greatly enhanced the capabilities of the 2011 Autodesk Revit API, thus enabling external developers to extend the Revit Architecture experience beyond the out-of-box capabilities. We have concentrated on making the API more open and on enabling access to more parts of the Revit Architecture model and controls.
Here are just some of the major improvements available in this release:
Dynamic model update helps enable external applications to react to changes in particular elements or changes to selected categories.
Analysis visualization framework helps enable external applications to graphically display detailed visual results of model analyses within Revit-based software.
Advanced selection and element filtering enables more precise selection behavior and access to advanced selection and filtering options can help improve speed and usability of applications.
Model update on demand allows Revit Architecture to react to many queued changes at once, helping to improve the speed of sequential programmatic edits.
UI tools: Developers now have access to a wider range of UI widgets, which will help to create a consistent look and feel and a more integrated experience.
Application idling event enables developers to take advantage of idle processing cycles within Revit Architecture to help accomplish tasks such as analysis calculations or updating external databases.
Custom error handling: Developers can display custom errors and warnings in Revit-based software’s standard interfaces, as well as suppress warnings.
